When I first began my career in tourism, I worked as a tour leader. For more than a decade, I guided groups across Southeast and East Asia, learning not only about the destinations themselves but also about what travelers truly expect from a journey. I built strong partnerships with local communities, but more importantly, I built friendships with the travelers who trusted me to show them this part of the world.

Many people choose a destination because they’ve heard of its beauty — the towering limestone cliffs of Halong Bay, the timeless majesty of Angkor Wat, or the lantern-lit charm of Hoi An. For others, it’s about checking off a bucket-list milestone. But what I’ve learned is this: when travelers look back years later, the memories that stick are rarely the famous landmarks. The real “wow” moments often happen in the in-between — in unexpected encounters, acts of kindness, and shared human experiences.

Take Phil and Phyllis from Tucson, Arizona. On our very first trip together in 2001, they didn’t remember Halong Bay most vividly — they remembered a group dinner where half the travelers canceled last minute, leaving far too much food on the table. Instead of wasting it, we packed it up and distributed it to beggars and homeless people near the hotel. I will never forget the tears of joy from one man when Phil handed him a portion of steamed shrimp in coconut. That simple act turned a dinner into a lifelong friendship. Phil and Phyllis returned to Vietnam in 2015, and once again, their favorite memories were not the “big sights,” but the small, spontaneous moments — visiting a local home, carving a pumpkin lantern, and laughing together like family.

Or consider the Conklin family, who joined me in 2002. A flood near Hoi An washed out the road to My Son ruins, forcing us to stop in a village. Instead of disappointment, the family remembers wading through the streets, watching farmers cast their nets, and being welcomed into villagers’ homes with tea and snacks. Debbie Conklin went on to visit over 80 countries, yet still calls her trip to Vietnam one of the best experiences of her life.

These stories are why my partner and I started this company in 2004: to create long-lasting memories that go far beyond guidebooks and checklists.
